Oncall and COVID-19 Survey Results

One of my concerns as COVID-19 took hold in the US was what the impact on teams that are oncall in tech would be. It can be extremely challenging to be oncall during a “normal” time, and this has been anything but normal. So, I decided to create a survey to learn more about what people’s experiences have been. The survey was conducted from April 8 to April 27, 2020, via a Google Form. It was anonymous and had 141 respondents.

7 Essential Principles of DevOps Success

At its core, DevOps is a set of principles. There are certain types of tools and processes that reinforce those principles and put them into practice. But the tools and processes are just a means to an end. The end itself is DevOps principles. Thus, DevOps success boils down to understanding the key DevOps principles, then identifying the tools and processes that enable your team to achieve them.

MicroK8s now native on Windows and macOS

Windows and macOS developers can now use MicroK8s natively! Use kubectl at the Windows or Mac command line to interact with MicroK8s locally just as you would on Linux. Clean integration into the desktop means better workflows to dev, build and test your containerised apps. MicroK8s is a conformant upstream Kubernetes, packaged for simplicity and resilience. It provides sensible defaults and bundles the most commonly used components for at-your-fingertips access.

This means the prospect of living in the ‘new normal’ is something we may need to accept and adapt to for quite some time.

Creating a truly connected financial organization

Financial services is no stranger to disruption. From fintech to blockchain and beyond, the industry has bobbed and weaved through a decade of constant change. Communication service providers in the time of COVID-19

Think about it. Without the efforts of communication service providers (CSPs) who handled a massive surge in traffic patterns, it would be much more difficult to work from home, learn online, or binge Tiger King. However, while they rose to the challenge, it also exposed the need for more agility in communications operations, sparking a renewed focus on the need for service transformation.

The $5B DevOps Stranglehold

Ten years ago NewRelic, DataDog, Splunk, Dynatrace and SolarWinds built tools we loved to use. They were easy to implement and solved problems quickly and efficiently. Each company was known primarily for a single, well-conceived product. NewRelic’s APM. Splunk’s log file analyzer. DataDog’s server monitor. SolarWinds’ network performance monitor. These companies were beloved by users during the 2000s. Fast forward to 2020 and the world is very different.
