Does your IT team know which applications, users, or devices are consuming the most network bandwidth? A video call freezes, file transfers slow down, or a network link becomes congested. Without traffic analysis, finding the source of the problem can take hours. Network analyzer software helps your IT team: However, tools differ in how they collect traffic data. Some analyze flow records, while others also inspect packets to provide more detail.

Why does an application that runs well in the data center slow down once one of its tiers moves to AWS or Azure? Often the servers are healthy and the cloud console shows no faults; the delay lives in the connection between them, where neither view reaches. That blind spot shows up in familiar ways: So these are design problems before they are operational ones.

How many devices are on your network right now? The usual answer is “check the spreadsheet”, and nobody is quite sure which copy is current. That's awkward during an outage and worse during an audit, or on the day a vendor advisory asks which switches run a vulnerable firmware build. Network inventory management retires that spreadsheet. In its place, you get a record that changes when the devices do, with hardware, addresses, VLANs and every router and switch config in one place.

If your IT team struggles to track devices, software licenses, warranties, and contracts, managing assets can become difficult. IT asset lifecycle management software helps you track every asset from purchase to retirement. It gives your team a clear record of: However, tools differ in their discovery methods, lifecycle workflows, license tracking, deployment options, and pricing. In this guide, we compare 7 IT asset lifecycle management software tools based on their features, limitations, and pricing.

Think about Outlook, Salesforce or the shared drive your staff open each morning, and at least one of them probably runs in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. That puts a good share of your traffic on a cloud network nobody on your team has ever seen. You still own a lot of that path (the VPN link, the route tables, the security groups), and it breaks in ways an office network doesn't.

Most network diagrams we come across land in one of two piles: the one drawn for an audit years ago and never opened since, and the one so crowded that finding the firewall takes squinting. The network diagram examples below sit between those piles, 8 diagrams IT teams actually use, sorted into physical, logical, and cloud or WAN. For the full build process behind one map, see our guide to the network topology diagram.

With VoIP monitoring, you hear about a bad call before anyone opens a ticket. Voice handles trouble worse than most traffic on your network. When a file download drops packets, it just asks for them again. A live call has no time for that. A 2% burst of packet loss, which a download wouldn't notice, is enough for everyone on the call to hear a gap. Most of those problems start on the network path, which you can measure and fix.

When a branch office can’t reach the ERP system and customer calls start dropping, who gets the call? It’s almost always the network administrator. What that person does the rest of the week is less clear, and a CIO, a CFO and the admin themselves would probably each describe it differently. Part of the reason is how much the network has grown. Ten years ago it was mostly switches, cables and one building.

Why does everything crawl at peak hour, even though every switch looks fine? Calls break up and file copies stall. Then the tickets arrive, each one some version of "the network is slow." It's rarely one broken device. A WAN link maxes out for an hour with voice packets queued behind a backup job. Last week's config change hasn't been linked to any of it yet. Network optimization sorts this out one measured step at a time, starting with performance monitoring.

If your Wi-Fi keeps slowing down or dropping connections, checking whether your access points are online won't tell you much. You need to know what's causing the problem, whether it's weak signal strength, overloaded access points, or too many connected devices. Wireless network monitoring tools help you track these issues, monitor access point health, and spot problems before they affect more users.
