Why you should market your status page like you market your product

As Symantec’s Principal ITSM Solutions Engineer, I was tasked 2 years ago with finding a way to quickly and effectively communicate incidents with our customers after a 4-day outage left our customers in the dark. I found Statuspage and knew it was the right tool for the job, offering a single place to send real-time updates to our customers across various channels (email, SMS, Twitter, etc.)

Using Real-Time Operations to Save Lives

Voices wield power. Staying silent is not an option. We must speak up and honor those who do. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, when communities come together to support victims and survivors of domestic abuse across the world. Earlier this month, SisterDuty, one of PagerDuty’s Employee Resource Groups (ERG), led a campaign to build toiletry kits and raise funds to benefit Casa de las Madres, which offers shelter and support to those at risk of abuse.

ITSM Incident Management + the Need for Speed

ITSM incident management might seem like a lot of words and letters thrown together. However, when examined in the light of managing changes to IT functionality, you quickly realize their importance. ITSM incident management quickly become realized as a way to define how teams should organize themselves and operate their IT services. And key to an effective understanding of this structure is ensuring rapid resolution of IT issues.

The Language of Incident Management

Language used across the high technology ecosystem is dynamic to say the least. Nowhere else can you find a mixture of technical jargon seamlessly intertwined with references from science fiction, mythology, pop-culture, literature, and more. While this makes conversations heard across technical environments colorful and engaging, it also makes communications allegorical and metaphorical— opening them to variable interpretation.
