Once upon a time, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, servers had to be built. A development team requested an environment for their code to run in, and a system administrator or infrastructure engineer plugged in a server and spent hours or days getting it ready to run code. Oh, and by the way, that was only one server of many required to run a web application—and this only happened after budgets were decided and forms were filled out.
I wouldn’t wish even upon my worst enemy the task of writing a company’s mission statement or brand slogan. Nowadays customers respond most to companies that convey higher-level, altruistic values in their messaging—especially in the world of enterprise tech, or Silicon Valley startups. You can’t write something like “we’re here to make lots of money and dominate the market”—that’s just not going to fly.
If you own a Google Pixel smartphone (or one of a couple of other models) Android’s latest update is finally here. If you own another model of Android smartphone then you’ll have to wait a little longer, but that’s nom de rigueur for the operating system. Dubbed Android 10, the new update has abandoned the usual confectionary based naming scheme in favour of a straight numbering system – possibly following Windows’ and Apple’s lead.
Another day of re:Invent is over and it’s all been amazing and overwhelming. And yes, the medals really do spin. It was a huge honor to be named an AWS Serverless Hero a few weeks ago. Acorn RISC Machine (Arm) processors were first released in 1985 to support low-power, low-cost computing. Because of their ability to deliver cost-effective performance, the next big use for Arm-based devices is in the cloud. AWS recently added a range of Arm-based EC2 instance types and is developing additional support (e.g., in Elastic Kubernetes Service). Meanwhile, Arm and Docker are working on tighter integration.
AWS Fargate has steadily gained traction in Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) environments because it allows users to run containerized applications without thinking about their underlying infrastructure. Today, AWS announced that support for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) on AWS Fargate is now generally available, giving Amazon EKS users the option to seamlessly manage their infrastructure with AWS Fargate instead of manually provisioning EC2 worker nodes.
