Redis is no longer open source. In March 2024 the project was relicensed, leaving its vast community confused. But the community did not give up, and started work to fork Redis to keep it open. On my recent OpenObservabilty Talks episode, I delved into Valkey, a prominent fork of Redis.

I'm excited to share that Gartner has included Monitoring as Code (MaC) as an emerging practice to their Hype Cycles for SREs again, the second year in a row. Since we founded Checkly, our vision has been that monitoring should sit in your repository, be codified, and scale with your software development. There is no alternative to MaC as it allows your engineering team(s) to work together, create and maintain checks, and ultimately own their monitoring.

As first announced during Sentry Launch Week, we have been working on shipping a major release of our JavaScript SDKs. This update makes getting started with Sentry JavaScript SDKs (even more) straightforward. This release broadens the number of frameworks and libraries where we provide automatic instrumentation, meaning you can access telemetry data in Sentry on day one, without configuration.

Testing NetFlow used to require time, expertise, and lab equipment. Using Kentik and the new Kappa agent, it can be done in minutes with nothing more than a spare Linux machine.

According to the Uptime Institute, during the last year, the number of IT incidents slowly declined while the average cost of every incident grew. As dependency on digital services increases, the cost for ⅔ of all outages exceeds $100,000. Stakes are rising, and more and more companies are investing in proactive incident management.

You might be tempted to think that running an app on a public cloud means you don’t need to maintain it. While that would be wonderful, it would require help from the public cloud providers and app developers themselves, and possibly a range of mythological creatures with magic powers. This is because any app, regardless of the infrastructure on which it runs or its output, requires maintenance in order to yield accurate and reliable outputs.

Aiven offers managed Valkey, an open source NoSQL database compatible with legacy OSS Redis* perfect for caching, message queues, and more. Today ‍Aiven is launching Aiven for Valkey to give customers a fully open source Redis alternative. Aiven for Caching will remain available to existing customers, but due to recent Redis licensing changes, it will remain on Redis 7.2.4. Valkey is a fork of OSS Redis, version 7.2.5, maintained by the Linux Foundation and is fully backwards compatible with Redis.
